Sling Sizing Tips

Finding Your Size

For pouch slings, it is crucial to have the correct size for maximum comfort and safety.

To find your size, take a soft measuring tape and measure from the middle of your shoulder bone to the top of your opposite hip bone. (Tip: if you don't have a measuring tape, use a piece of string to measure yourself, then hold the string up to a ruler to determine the length.)

If you are pregnant it is a good idea to measure across your back from shoulder to opposite hip and compare this to your front measurement. If you have broad shoulders or a big bust, you might need to size up. If you have narrow shoulders you might need to size down.

Our pouch slings come in five sizes. Most women will wear a Small or Medium. Most men will wear a Large. If you find you fall between sizes or outside the chart, we are more than happy to make custom sizes on request.

SLING SIZE Shoulder to hip Height Weight Bra size
XS 21"-22" up to 5'4" up to 120 lbs AB
S 23"-24" 5'0" - 5'10" 110 - 160 lbs ABCD
M 25"-26" 5'2" - 6'1" 140 - 200 lbs CDE+
L 27"-28" 5'4" - 6'3" 180 - 240 lbs CDE+
XL 29"-30" 5'6" - 6'4" over 200 lbs DE+

Fine Tuning the Fit

Your baby should be carried near your center of gravity for optimum comfort. For a front carry, the bottom of the pouch should be just below your navel when your baby is in the sling and the sling fabric should be spread out flat across your back and over your shoulder.

Some people like to wear their baby higher or tighter, other people like their baby lower or looser. You will need to experiment a bit to see what suits you best. Please see our Sling Wearing Tips for photo instructions of the different possible carrying positions.

You know your sling is too small if: it feels uncomfortably tight or digs into your neck, digs into the baby's legs (hip carry) or is next to impossible to get baby in.

You know your sling is too loose if: it slips off your shoulder, your baby bumps against your thighs as you walk, or your back aches after only a short time.

Fabric and Care

Most Continuum Family slings are made from stretch cotton fabrics (cotton/lycra blends) that have a bit of give widthwise. In our experience, this makes a more comfortable sling for both the baby and the wearer. The stretch allows the sling to conform better to baby's body and minimizes pressure points on the wearer's back.

Our fabrics have all been pre-washed (in scent/dye free detergent) and dried once to prepare them for sewing and prevent further shrinkage once the sling is made. Over time and with wear, your sling may seem to "stretch out". Washing and drying the sling will return it to its normal size. Most cotton fabrics get better and softer with washing, so don't be afraid to wash your sling!
